It was opened in 1926 as part of the international Valmorea railway, but only two years later the border crossing was closed by the Italian government, which disapproved of a private international connection.

Progressively weakened and decommissioned by 1977, it was partially reactivated in the early years of the third millennium, limited to the Malnate Olona-Mendrisio section, in order to operate episodic tourist services with steam traction.
