Why a square evoking death in one of the most vibrant parts of Viterbo's medieval center? Piazza della Morte (Piazza of Death) owes its name to the 16th-century Confraternity of Oration and Death, which cared for the poorest deceased. At the center of the square, the Fontana della Morte (or Fontana di San Tommaso), built around the mid-13th century, is one of the city's oldest fountains and an example of medieval urban ingenuity: in addition to being decorative, it supplied the neighborhood with drinking water, connecting to a network that reached washhouses and vegetable gardens.
