In the center of Stora Torget stands the bronze statue of Sundsvall's founder, Gustav II Adolf. Holding the founding charter in his left hand, the king gazes eastward toward Vängåvan, where the city was planned after its relocation from present-day Åkroken. Beside the king is the Sundsvall coat of arms. Created by Harald Sörensen-Ringi, the statue was a gift from Thure Reinhold Thuresson, director of the Sundsvall-Vasa steamship company. It was unveiled on August 23, 1911, the 290th anniversary of the granting of provisional privileges.
