On January 15, 1879, the Sundsvall city council decided to build a new school building. The new gymnasium was financed by a donation from the wholesaler A. P. Hedberg, after whom it was subsequently named. The architect was Anshelm Liljeström. The school building was completed in 1886, and the side wings were added in 1927.
