Fort Vauban in Alès is one of the city's oldest buildings and sits atop the Butte de la Roque, a hill overlooking the city – perfect for a cultural stop during a hike or bike ride.
The fort dates back to 1688. The U-shaped complex features approximately 350 meters of defensive walls, six bastions, and 40 gun ports. It consists of two main buildings, including quarters for the governor, a chapel, and soldiers.
