To the northwest of Alès rises a somewhat strange mountain, Mont Ricateau. It looks a bit like a volcano, and with good reason: Its pointed cone shape is due to its original function as a dump for the former Rochebelle coal mine. In the summer of 2004, a forest fire ravaged the town of Alès. The mountain was hit particularly hard and the mine waste buried under it caught fire. It is said that since then a smoldering fire has been smoldering beneath its surface. Now it is clear why Mont Ricateau looks like a volcano.
