On September 10, 1941, a total of 854 Jewish people from Merkinė and the surrounding area were murdered here by German occupying forces and their Lithuanian helpers. Men, women, and children were rounded up, taken to a nearby forest clearing, and shot there.
Today, the mass graves serve as a reminder of the Jewish community of Merkinė, whose centuries-long history was violently ended by the Holocaust.
