The church was built in 1841-1844 based on a design by the architect Karolis Gregotovičius from 1840. Its founder was General Vincas Žilinskas, the builder was his brother Domininkas (who lived in Nedzingė Manor). The church was consecrated in 1849 and was a branch of Merkinė. The parish was founded in 1862.

In 1907 a shelter was built. The founders were Poles and the services were held in Polish. Until 1894, the service was sung in Lithuanian every other Sunday. By order of the governor of the Vilnius diocese in 1911, Polish services were held in the church every third Sunday. Therefore, Žilinskas refused to execute his father's will and gave no money for the parson's maintenance. Thanks to the care of pastors Kazimieras Steberiokas and Donatas Linartas (1874-1947, murdered by the Bolsheviks) and donations from parishioners, the church was renovated. Father Zigmas Neciunskas was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1946. He returned to Lithuania in 1956 (Translated from Wikipedia).
