Frederick William IV, King of Prussia (1795-1861, King 1740-1861), gave Bad Oeynhausen its name by royal decree in 1848 (in honor of Carl Freiherr von Oeynhausen, a mining engineer in Prussian state service, who had drilled the first thermal springs starting in 1831). Frederick William IV, the only Prussian king who did not wage war, left his mark, among other things, as the founder and patron of Bad Oeynhausen.
