The Grauerort fortress on the Elbe River north of Stade is one of the most outstanding historical military sites in Germany. It had already become obsolete as a Prussian fortress in 1895 and was used as a mine depot from 1914 to 1945. A landing bridge built into the Elbe in 1926 facilitated the smooth transport of goods to the facility. Until the end of World War II, ships were loaded directly into the river via this bridge. A narrow-gauge railway connected the bridge to the depot. Despite its various functions, the fortress was never destroyed.
