For the fact that the market square of Elsfleth is not really big, there is a fairly large monument. Erected in 1859, dedicated to the "Black Duke", Friedrich Wilhelm von Brunswick-Oels, major general in the Prussian army at the beginning of the 19th century, until the occupation of large parts of Germany by Napoleon's troops.

Son and successor Friedrich Wilhelm, also called "the black duke", was with his "black group" a legendary hero of the liberation wars.

On June 16, 1815, Duke Friedrich Wilhelm von Brunswick-Oels died after the Battle of Quatre-Bras in the Kingdom of the United Netherlands. It was certainly not unusual at that time for German folk heroes of the Napoleonic Wars to lose their lives on the battlefields. What is unusual, however, is that a monument in Elsfleth is dedicated to the Prussian general and reigning Duke of Brunswick.
