On the small market square of Elsfleth, we discover a monument in the neo-Gothic style that rises about twelve meters in height. Duke Friedrich Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Oels (1771-1815), known as the "Black Duke" because of the black uniforms of his riders, was on the run with his troops from the French when he stopped at Elsfleth on August 8, 1809 made. The people of Elsfleth supported the duke as much as they could for the journey to England. The monument on the town hall square commemorates this event. (elsfleth.de)

Note:
Thanks to another monument at the northern end of Syke, we know where the Duke's troops camped 3 days earlier. Monument to the Blacks 1809
