Whale Museum – Where do the whales that visit Hermanus come from? What do they eat? How do they reproduce, and where do they disappear during our summer months? What is spyhopping? The mysteries of these magnificent marine mammals are revealed in the Whale House Museum.

Well-written and informative installations, a photo exhibition, and a hanging skeleton of a life-size southern right whale provide a window into the world of these impressive mammals.

You'll also meet the whales' fellow travelers. Barnacles and whale lice attach themselves to the whales' bodies and drift along through the sea. Whale lice aren't lice at all, but actually small crustaceans.

The migration patterns of whales are examined, shedding light on the reasons why whales migrate to Hermanus from June to December.
Reproduction is also explained. Calves are born underwater, tail-first, and another female whale acts as a midwife. There is a strong bond between mother and calf. Nursing calves can grow at a rate of 30 mm per day.

You'll also learn about certain types of whale behavior. Terms like sailing, lobtailing, breaching, porpoising, and spyhopping will be explained. Then, head outside to see the behavior in action.
