    Who was Adelbert?
Our church and parish are named after Saint Adelbert, a missionary from Ireland, about whom little is known. Adelbert was probably one of the 12 companions of the famous Willibrord, who landed near Katwijk in 690 to carry out missionary work. Adelbert worked and lived primarily in Kennemerland, particularly in the town of Egmond, where he founded a church and regularly retreated to the dunes as a hermit.

Adelbert seems to have been a simple man. More of a doer than a teacher. A man of charisma. He may have been the son of King Deira. He is sometimes depicted as a king.

Adelbert is said to have died in 740. The people of Egmond buried him in the dunes, where they built a simple wooden church. Christians and pagans alike soon came to venerate the grave, and because many miracles occurred, the Adelbertus field in Egmond became a popular place of pilgrimage.

Adelbert's relics were later exhumed and moved several times. This created the Adelbertus well, a healing spring. For many years, a procession to the small church in the dunes took place every year on June 25th, drawing people from Alkmaar, Haarlem, and the surrounding area. Adelbert's relic now lies in the Benedictine Adelbert Abbey in Egmond-Binnen. An Adelbertus procession to his field still takes place on or around June 25th.
