De IJzeren Kaap was designed in 1854 as a landmark for ships on the Texelstroom, a fairway in the Wadden Sea.
The Kaap was a lightless sea mark, which means it was only visible to shipping during the day. Since the fairway was very unpredictable, it was decided in 1977 to use a fire beacon. De IJzeren Kaap is a rare example of a well-preserved lightless beacon.
