The polder mill used to ensure the drainage of the island. The wind was captured by the four powerful blades, converted into rotational energy and drove an Archimedean screw in the basement. This pumped the water from the drainage ditches into several holding basins. These could then be drained at low tide. There were gates to the Wadden Sea in the dike. The system was taken out of service when the dike was raised in 1965.
