    Tips

    November 13, 2025

The Elbow Sand Hills were created when the last great ice sheet retreated around 14,000 years ago. These sand deposits and silt from glacial lakes and spillways were then left behind. Today, the dune field spans 13,500 hectares and is open to visitors for exploration. Wind can pick up and whip sand around, so pants and long sleeves are recommended.
