High above Paro Rinpung Dzong stands the Ta Dzong (watchtower), built in 1649 to protect the dzong. In 1968, during the reign of the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, it was converted into the National Museum of Bhutan. Its unusual, round shape, reminiscent of a shell, makes the museum a particularly attractive attraction. The Ta Dzong is located on the banks of the Mangde Chu River in Paro. Inside the Ta Dzong is an underground passage, presumably connecting the tower to the Pa Chhu River, which served as a water supply during times of war.
