The "burning lake" in Bhutan, or Mebar Tsho, is a sacred pilgrimage site in the Bumthang Valley, named after the legend of Saint Pema Lingpa. According to legend, in the 15th century, Pema Lingpa jumped into the gorge with a burning butter lamp and emerged with the lamp still burning and hidden religious treasures. The site is a gorge, not a large lake, and is considered one of the holiest places in Bhutan.
