"As early as 1822, brine was extracted in nearby Dürrheim, whereupon Württemberg made every effort to also gain access to the sought-after mineral. After the failure of drilling attempt 1 near Mühlhausen and the successful drilling attempt 2 in Hilben, borehole 3 was drilled here, directly on the border with the Grand Duchy of Baden. In March 1824, the drill bit struck very pure rock salt at a depth of 167 m, with a thickness of 14.5 m.
The main customer for Schwenningen salt was Switzerland.
