Plön railway station was opened on May 31, 1866, as part of the railway line between Neumünster and Neustadt (Holstein) by the Altona-Kiel Railway Company, which was extended from Eutin to Lübeck in 1873 by the Eutin-Lübeck Railway. Initial plans for a line through the Holstein Switzerland region date back to 1844, but the planning process was protracted, primarily because the Danish kings initially refused to allow a connection to the then-free Hanseatic city of Lübeck.
