The castle was built during the Thirty Years' War between 1633 and 1636 by Duke Joachim Ernst of Plön. During the Nazi era, it served as the National Political Education Institute (NAPOLA).The state government sold the property to the non-profit Fielmann Academy, which undertook extensive renovations of the castle. Since then, it has served as a training center for Fielmann opticians, among others.Guided tours include the chapel, the Knights' Hall, and the ducal apartments. The castle is also used for the classical concert series "Castle Concerts."

Plön Castle is one of the largest castles in Schleswig-Holstein and the only one preserved at an elevated location. It is located in the town of Plön in the district of the same name. The former residence of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön was built in the 17th century during the Thirty Years' War. (Source: Wikipedia)
