As an "eternal sign of gratitude for the blessed founder and loyalty to the ruling house", the laying of the foundation stone for the monument to "Old Fritz" took place on Whitsunday on May 31, 1903, on the 150th anniversary of Friedrichshagen. The monument was to be built with donations. Wilhelm II approved the construction after the model by the Gladenbeck sculptor Felix Görling was exhibited in Berlin Castle.

Frederick II, the Great (* 24 January 1712 in Berlin; † 17 August 1786 in Potsdam), popularly known as "The Old Fritz", was King of Prussia from 1740, King of Prussia from 1772 and Margrave of Brandenburg from 1740 and thus one of the Electors of the Holy Roman Empire. He came from the Hohenzollern dynasty.
