The Moresnet viaduct, one of the longest viaducts on the Belgian railway line 24 (Tongeren-Visé-Aachen), connects the port of Antwerp with the industrial area of the Ruhr (Germany). Its construction was ordered by the German occupation during the First World War.

As early as 1834, the Belgian state wanted to connect the port of Antwerp with the emerging industries in the Ruhr area. After much discussion between Belgium and Prussia, an agreement was signed on August 15, 1903. This agreement provided for the establishment of a new Louvain-Saint-Trond Tongeren-Vise-Welkenraedt railway line with the expansion to Prussia via Aachen. When the war broke out in 1914, the work had not yet started. The Germans under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Wilhelm Gröner decided to start construction of line 24 on December 18, 1914 (Tongeren-Visé-Montzen-Moresnet-Botzelaer border tunnel from Botzelaer in Gemmenich) and the construction of the Moresnet viaduct to start the logistics To meet the needs of their army. Civil engineering began in April 1915.
