The peat bogs around here have been used as a source of fuel for centuries. Traditionally, the peat turf was cut out in blocks and turned over to dry; once dry, it could be burnt and was a common fuel for homes and industry.

Peat bogs are important carbon sinks, burning peat is inefficient and damages the habitat so this practise is being phased out.
