The first secured message about the Rhine bridge is contained in a privilege of Duke Albrecht of Austria from 1292. The maintenance of the Rhine crossing and the customs officers were paid with the income from the bridge toll. Together with the shipping toll from 1460, this was an important source of income for the city. On the night of October 8th to 9th, 1799, Russian soldiers set fire to the bridge on their retreat. The construction of the current bridge lasted from 1814 to 1816. The last renovations were completed in 1996 (superstructure and roadway) and 2002 (bridge piers).
