The earth pyramids are a phenomenal spectacle of nature! Precondition for their emergence are special characteristics of the material, the climate, a sheltered position and the presence of larger boulders. Heavy rainfall softens the ground and parts of the slope slide down. More rainfall promotes the formation of furrows in the slope, while slowly creating columns, which are usually protected by a capstone. Earth pyramids are formed mainly in moraine landscapes, as they are typical of the Burgraviato. It takes several thousand years to reach a meter high earth column. And so it probably happened in Dorf Tirol and Kuens ...The Tyrolean earth pyramids (pictured) can best be seen on a circular hike: from the center of Dorf Tirol, the path leads across the meadows and Waalweg to Schloss Auer and the "Tiroler Kreuz". The hike then takes you to the Schlossweg, which leads back to Schloss Tirol and in the other direction back to the village. Along the trail there are several viewpoints, from which the four or five earth pyramids at Castle Tyrol are clearly visible. A storm broke some pillars some years ago. You can also admire the earth pyramids from the Hochmuth cable car.The Erdpyramidenweg takes you to the earth pyramids of Kuens. It leads in about 35 minutes from Fineletal to Ungerichthof in Kuens. If you want to hike a bit further, the Kuenser Waalweg also offers a beautiful view of the natural phenomenon. By the way: In South Tyrol there are other earth pyramids in Terento and plates in the Puster Valley and on the Ritten.
