At that time – around the transition from the 19th to the 20th century – there was lively interest in many places in Germany in honoring Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (* 1815 – + 1898, the first Chancellor of the German Empire from 1871, previously Minister-President of Prussia and Chancellor of the North German Confederation) with a monument. However, only in very few cases was a statue of him made and erected. Sometimes these were pyramid-like structures, but often – as here in Bad Ems above the Lahn – actual observation towers were erected and named after Bismarck.
