Barlach did not give his work a name. In the Kieler Zeitung of December 11, 1928, the title “Spirit Fighter” was suggested. Barlach did not object, but accepted it and used it himself.
In January 1929 Barlach went to Kiel, looked at his work and wrote to his brother: “The reception of the group is frosty and negative. They had... even bent their swords during the night, all right-wing parties are pulling out their leather against me..."
