With the founding of the German Empire in 1871, the Prussian King Kaiser Wilhelm I (1797 - 1888) was appointed German Emperor. His reign is one of iron-fisted duty in a prosperous empire. So by the time he dies at 90, he has achieved a high level of popularity throughout the empire. This was also the case in Schleswig-Holstein, which was originally skeptical about Prussian dominance.

The sculptor Adolf Brütt was ultimately commissioned to create the magnificent equestrian statue.

The mounted monarch stands larger than life on a high pedestal. The decorations on the pedestal demonstrate regional ties: a bronze relief shows the laying of the foundation stone in 1887 for what is now the Kiel Canal, a second commemorates the Schleswig-Holstein uprising in 1849 against Denmark.

Two bronze figures on the front represent the regions of Schleswig and Holstein, a fisherwoman and a farmer, while a third figure symbolizes the navy.

The three bronze figures were melted down during the war to make weapons, and the statue itself survived the war badly damaged.

On the occasion of the 1972 Summer Olympics, the monument was extensively restored,

although the three bronze figures were not restored.
