The monkey stones are an elongated, strongly rugged rock group of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, which is located east of Bad Schandau in the Saxon Switzerland and is located in the district Ostrau. In the north they are bounded by the Kirnitzschtal, in the south by the Elbe Valley and in the east by the two winter mountains. The highest point is the 458 m high, named after Saxony's last Queen Carola of Wasa-Holstein-Gottorp Carolafelsen.
The monkey stones are a much visited tourist destination; especially the Upper Affenstein promenade offers a great view of the Elbsandsteingebirge at low altitude differences. The Carolafelsen, one of the most famous viewpoints in the massif of the monkey stones, is also a popular hike.
There are accesses to the monkey stones from Kirnitzschtal as well as Schrammsteinen and Schmilka.

About the twin stairs and the Hanzschelstiege, you can also climb the monkey stones.

At a relatively short distance, you will see many beauties of this fairytale mountain range. The stairs are not to be underestimated and should be reserved for the experienced. For all others there are beautiful alternative climbs. A cyclical hiking spares the otherwise unfortunately usual overcrowding and traffic jams - especially on the ridge path or the more famous stairs. The starting point is the Kirnitzschtal with its waterfalls and mills.

A stretch to enjoy upwards and a highlight for photos with a clear view.
