The gate came to Chorzów in 1958. Before that, it decorated the entrance to the palace in Świerklaniec (Śląskie Voivodeship). The palace was built in 1876. It was built by Count Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck. It was the Count's wedding gift to Blanka de Paiva's wife. Świerklaniec delighted everyone. The palace in the style of Louis XIII was designed by the French architect Hector Lefuel, the same one who finished, among others, construction of the Louvre. In Świerklaniec he created a "little Versailles". The palace burned down in 1945. In 1962, the rest of the walls were blown up. Pools, fountains, animal sculptures, the Cavalier's Palace, the church in the park, and the palace gate survived then. And it was she who in 1958 was transferred to the then Provincial Park of Culture and Recreation, and today the Silesian Park in Chorzów. Some say that it was saved from destruction in this way, others that it was simply stolen ... Whatever the case, it has been decorating the main entrance to the zoo for almost 60 years. It is located in front of the Giraffe (we wrote about it in the post Chorzów - Silesian Giraffe). Along with the gate, fragments of the steel palace fencing also arrived in Chorzów.
