"The railway bridge was opened in 1874. Initially, it consisted of a single track. In 1927, it was expanded to a double track.

The bridge was operated by the private railway company Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahngesellschaft (BME), which was founded on October 18, 1843, in Elberfeld, now part of Wuppertal.

World War II severely damaged parts of the bridge. It wasn't until several years after the war, in 1951, that it was rebuilt, though initially with only one track. Later, the line was temporarily closed until the railway bridge's rails were finally removed in 1991. The second track of the old bridge was used as the foundation for the adjacent pedestrian bridge, which was built in 1988.

The railway bridge itself was no longer in use, and the structure has been steadily deteriorating ever since. It's a shame, because even at 70 years old, this beautiful structure isn't really that old. There are far older bridges still in operation." are..."
