The train station is a good starting point for a hike to the "Keltenlager" trekking camp. The award-winning "Saar-Hunsrück-Steig" long-distance hiking trail (stages 8 and 9) is also easily accessible from here.

The former separation station on both sides is located on the Nahe Valley Railway and was the end point of the Hochwald Railway to Trier and the Westrich Railway to Kusel. It was opened on May 26, 1860 as part of the extension of the Nahe Valley Railway from Idar-Oberstein to Neunkirchen (Saarland).
From 1967 passenger traffic was increasingly restricted, from 1969 onwards there were no more passenger trains to Hermeskeil and Freisen, but the trains to St. Wendel were operated electrically in the same year.
