It is unknown in which year the church was built. However, it is believed that it was consecrated on the day of the death of Bishop Lamberti of Maastricht, on September 17th. The largest part of this building dates back to the 13th century, but has undergone many changes over the years. In 1616, the sculptor Ludwig Münstermann used an upside-down older Romanesque baptismal font for the baptismal font that was created in its current form, which probably came from a church that had sunk in the Jade Bay.
