The sand lock was intended to prevent floodwaters flowing in from the North Sea from flowing unhindered into the Sorge. This protected the lowlands in the upper concern area from flooding. An information board on the bicycle bridge provides detailed information about the development and importance of the lock and pumping station. Also interesting is that the sand sluice played a crucial role in the introduction and spread of the potato in 1763. An information board with excerpts from the Christiansholm/Meggerholm village chronicle provides information on this at the lock.

From Meggerdorf onwards, the care is channeled through an artificially created straight bed. The Alte Sorge is cut off from the rivers in the Meggerkoog and adjacent lowlands. It is now called the Old Worry Loop. In addition to the land use, primarily as pasture, this is a large nature reserve in which many water birds rest on their migrations in spring and autumn.
The Sorge itself flows south along the diversion dike to the sand lock.
This is a weir with a lock and a very powerful pumping station, which was built in its current form in the 1950s to finally protect the farming land behind it from floods. It repels fresh water that accumulates during North Sea floods as well as salt water mixed with eider water during storm surges.
