The small island of Ummanz, which is connected to Rügen by a bridge over the Focker stream, lies with its natural wealth amidst the Bodden waters, enclosed by the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park.
The uniqueness of the island is what attracts nature lovers and ornithologists from all over, especially when around 70,000 cranes invade the island in spring and autumn.
The small town of Waase unites picturesque lagoon, island and half-timbered idyll. Tourism information and a small national park exhibition are united under the thatched roof of the Alte Küsterei.
