Hiking

One of the most important small monuments in the Saale district is the Zappendorf prayer column, a plate on a stele that is decorated with various reliefs and inscriptions. It is located on the road from Zappendorf to Benkendorf right next to the Salza Bridge and commemorates the murder of Nickel Klein, as a plaque from the State Office of Archeology explains. It has stood at this location for 500 years, was built before the Reformation, and is therefore considered the last evidence of Catholicism before that epochal break. The wayside shrine was erected in 1513 or 1518.
