Rhododendron beds require special conditions: loose, humus-rich, and acidic soil (pH 4.5-6) and a partially shaded location, as rhododendrons don't like full sun. Planting takes place in spring or fall, with soil preparation that includes drainage in heavy soils and incorporating rhododendron soil, leaf compost, or bark humus. A layer of bark mulch protects the roots, and suitable companion plants such as ferns, grasses, hostas, or perennials enrich the bed.
