"The 1764 square meter Jewish cemetery in the Bönninghardter Heide (Xantener Weg) can be reached from the main road via a forest path, it is right on the edge of the forest. The path is signposted from Weseler Straße (Bundesstraße B 58).

Although the oldest surviving tombstones date from 1829 and 1831, the cemetery is said to have been laid out around 1838. It was occupied until 1931 and used by the Jews of Geldern until 1866, when they received their own cemetery (Reuter 2007).

"The Jewish cemetery of Issum, laid out in 1838, is two kilometers north-east of the community center on the southern slope of the Boenningardt. Jews from Geldern were probably also buried here until they were given their own cemetery in 1866. The 1764 square meter property has always been owned by the local community and is still maintained by them today. The tombstones in this now 'closed' cemetery - the last burial took place in 1931 - have been badly weathered in recent years. Pictures in the rooms of the school building reflect the better condition of the stones in earlier years." (issum.de, 2022)

The burial ground, which is not locked, is surrounded by a hunter's fence with a small gate and is lined with bushes and trees. The plot, which rises in a northwesterly direction, makes a very well-kept impression. 26 tombstones have been preserved here (own census when visiting the site on April 20, 2016, as well as steinheim-institut.de with “26 preserved tombstones from the years 1829 to 1931”, different from uni-heidelberg.de, where 25 tombstones are mentioned). 26 inscriptions from the years 1829 to 1931 are documented in the epigraphic database epidat of the Steinheim Institute in Essen."
