In the Middle Ages, numerous fish ponds were created in this water-rich side valley of the Aue by the monks of the Harsefeld monastery. The fish were used for fasting food. With the dissolution of the monastery in 1647, the ponds fell into disrepair and by the end of the 19th century there were no more ponds. Around 1905, some of the ponds were re-laid because some of the dams were still there. Today, practically only the two-part, former Papenteich and the large Stamm- or Schwanenteich are preserved.
