The Bamberg prince bishop Marquard Sebastian von Staufenberg had it built in 1689 as an official palace for the episcopal Oberamt Baunach. His coat of arms can be found on the north side. His successor Lothar Franz von Schönborn completed the work. Its coat of arms hangs above the entrance gate. The prince bishops now regularly came to hunt in the Baunachtal, which was rich in game, and lived here in the castle, which is why the people also called it the "hunting castle". In 1802 the Oberamt Baunach was dissolved. From 1838 to 1932 the building housed the district court and later the district court. Subsequently, the clothing company STRIWA mainly produced leather clothing, coats and trousers in this building. In 1982 the company was closed. In 2009 the castle was converted into a retirement home.

The Baunach district court was located here from 1879 to 1932. In 1932 the district was abolished and merged with the district court of Ebern.
