The square Jardim da Praça do Império is bordered by the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos Monastery (north), the Jardim de Belém and Jardim Afonso de Albuquerque (east), Avenida da Índia and the Linha de Cascais railway line (south), and the Centro Cultural de Belém (west). Also nearby are the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (south) and the Palácio de Belém (northeast).

José Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo designed the square, along with the fountain (Fonte Monumental), in honor of the Portuguese colonial empire for the 1940 Exposition of the Portuguese World. The central fountain has a diameter of almost 30 meters.
