The approximately 86-hectare area, which was declared a nature reserve in 1992 under the identifier 1436011, extends southeast of Ruppertshain, a district of the town of Kelkheim. In 2000, the area was included in the European Natura 2000 network as a FFH site with the same area and name.
The L 3016 state road runs along the western edge of the area, through it and to the southeast, and the B 455 runs to the south and east. The Fischbach stream flows through the area.
To the west of the area extends the approximately 119-hectare Rossert - Hainkopf - Dachsbau nature reserve (NSG), and to the southeast lies the approximately 9.7-hectare Kickelbach von Fischbach nature reserve (NSG).
