The cross tells an interesting story, that of Alfred Rötzler. After his successful escape from captivity, he vowed gratitude to build a chapel in his home town of Unteraching. The community refused to allow him to do so, but instead this cross was installed in 1960. He died in 1963. His daughter, who lives nearby, watches over the cross, which was renovated in 2015.
