The old washhouse, dating from 1864, is supported by superb freestone pillars that came from the old market hall built in 1554 on Place Gambetta to protect the daily market held there. This washhouse was in use until 1945.

Washerwomen washed their clothes here on their knees using wooden beaters. It was formerly called the "Lavoir du Paradou," after a fulling mill that had been used to beat and degrease hemp linens since the 16th century.
