Count Egilmar, the first hereditary count of Oldenburg, founded the church in 1124 as a daughter church of Wiefelstede. In 1134 it was consecrated by Siward (1142-1157), the abbot of Rastede, in "honorem St. Johannis Baptistae" (in honor of St. John the Baptist). The west tower was built in 1200 from granite blocks and bricks. An extension to the east in the Gothic style with cross-ribbed vaults took place in the 15th century. The main entrance was redesigned in 1888.
