The nature reserve, marked NSG WE 075, is around 24 hectares in size. It is almost completely surrounded by the “Zwischenahner Meer with surroundings” landscape protection area. The area has been protected since March 21, 1939. It was initially 6.5 hectares in size and was expanded to around 24 hectares in 1941. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Ammerland district.
The area in the northwest of the Zwischenahner Meer, south of Elmendorf, serves to preserve a typical section of the Zwischenahner Meer shore. Here you can find willows and alders on the banks, reed beds in front of the bank strip, as well as floating leaf communities with yellow pond lilies and white water lilies in the open water. There is a cormorant colony in the nature reserve.
