The so-called Austrian Cemetery is located in the Milchborntal along the Bensberger Schlosswanderweg. A memorial there is intended to commemorate the Austrian soldiers who died en masse of typhus during the revolutionary wars. In February 1793, a military hospital for the wounded Austrian soldiers was set up in Bensberg Castle. However, the hygienic conditions in the hospital were so bad that in 1793 a typhoid epidemic broke out, killing over 3,000 soldiers. The dead were buried in mass graves in the Milchborn valley.
