The Bergisches Museum has existed since 1928. At that time, it was founded by the citizens as the Heimatmuseum Bensberg. Today his exhibition shows how people in our region lived and worked around 150 years ago. We also tell the story of local ore mining from the Romans to the end of active mining in the 1970s.

In the Bergisches Museum you can find out how people in Bergisch Gladbach and the surrounding area lived and worked around 150 years ago. The museum area at the Bensberg town hall focuses on old handicraft techniques and ore mining in the former Bensberg ore district.

"The Bergisches Museum for Mining, Crafts and Trade in the heart of Bergisch Gladbach-Bensberg has been illustrating the fortunes of the people in the region since 1928. At that time, it was founded by committed citizens as the Bensberg Local History Museum.

Even today, visitors can learn how people lived and worked in the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The exhibitions tell the story of how the Bensberg ore mining district flourished around 150 years ago and trace the traces of local ore mining from the Romans to the end of active mining in the 1970s. In the walk-in tunnel from the 1930s, young and old can experience first hand what the hard daily work of the miners underground might have looked like.

In half-timbered houses on the idyllic outdoor area, an oasis of calm in the middle of the city, past craftsmanship can be experienced. Volunteers show in regular demonstrations of the art of blacksmithing, wheelwrighting, weaving or spinning. On the monthly baking days, the smell of the historic bakery makes you want sweet bread with raisins and crispy rye bread. At regular events, expert beekeepers share their extensive knowledge about the bees native to the museum and their preservation. Golden honey from our own harvest is tempting to take away from the museum shop.

An active event program for young and old brings local history and traditional crafts to life with guided tours, workshops, lectures and hands-on activities. The highlight is the annual museum festival, which is organized by the museum's friends' association on the first Sunday in August.

Kindergartens, primary and secondary schools will find what they are looking for in the constantly growing museum educational offering.

By the way, you can also get married in the museum on Saturdays: There is space for civil weddings in small groups - in the middle of Bensberg and in the middle of the countryside."
